Terra Nova: 10 Reasons Why Fox's Dino-Drama Should or Should Not Be Renewed

Jason O'Mara Terra Nova ended its freshman season by permanently cutting off the colony to the future and unloading a whole slew of new mysteries for what the producers likely hope means a second season. Lucas Taylor (Ashley Zuckerman) finally got the upper-hand on his father, bringing the Phoenix Army to the past, where they planned to mine and strip Terra Nova of all its resources. Commander Taylor (Stephen Lang) refused to go down without a fight, sending Jim (Jason O'Mara) to the future to destroy Hope Plaza, essentially plunging everyone left in the colony into the dark ages, with no further contact with the future possible. However, before the Phoenix Army high-tailed it away, they left a clue that could mean... there may be humans on prehistoric Earth? Or another portal? Check out the best TV shows of 2011 What will happen to the stranded colonists on Terra Nova? That can only be answered if Fox decides to renew the show. We've put together a list of 10 reasons why the network should or should not bring the series back for a second round. Should Not: The family. Sure the Shannon clan has come a long way since Jim was locked up in prison, but the show has yet to establish an emotional tie to the family that would keep audiences invested in wanting to see where they end up. Exhibit A: Josh Shannon (Landon Liboiron) swiftly became as expendable as fellow renegade Tyler Evans (Logan Huffman), and we all know how that ended on V. Should: Stephen Lang. He's a geek god (See: Avatar). Lang perfectly captured the stoic leader, often with a hint of humor. We could watch him in anything, though he can leave the shirtless scenes to Jason O'Mara, thank you very much. (Plus: We'd love to see a flashback to the 118 days where Taylor was alone on the planet.) Should Not: The dinosaurs. The producers assured fans at Comic-Con that there would be at least one dinosaur in every episode, and sure, they've lived up to that promise, but every dino appearance has been an afterthought, making us forget the colony is meant to be in constant danger from the next CGI mess that fails to live up to Jurassic-sized expectations. Even the carno-carnage in the finale was lackluster. Should: Sci-fi shows should survive! Otherworldly series are being overrun by procedurals and reality shows. Maybe if the series showed a little more dino-drama and a little less teenage angst (we're looking at you, Maddy and Mark), those sci-fi fans would come running back. Should Not: The mole. There's nothing worse than a spy who suddenly begins acting obvious (cough, Skye, we saw that coming...) once the show is finally ready to reveal her identity. Worse: Even after learning that Skye (Allison Miller) was turning against the colony to save her mother, the show had her flipping back and forth in the finale to the point where we gave up on caring whose side she was on. What were the worst TV moments of 2011? Should: The Badlands could be good? The mysterious Badlands, only now introduced in the season finale, where the prow of an old wooden ship was discovered, could hold a wealth of new mystery. Namely, how did the ship even get there? (Oh, we're having a Lost flashback.) And why did the Phoenix army head straight there after being cut off from 2149? Should Not: The lack of action. The entire first season had been building up to the arrival of the 11th pilgrimage, along with Lucas Taylor taking over the colony, yet the only scene they showed was the initial explosion, denying viewers of the first real action since the pilot's dino-carnage. Did they spend all the money on the pilot and not have anything left? Should: More than Terra Nova? There's a whole world out there just waiting to be discovered outside the colony. If Terra Nova gets renewed, that's the first place they should head. And for that matter, why not show more of the future, too? Should Not: Obvious plot devices. You know when a character that has rarely been in the spotlight is suddenly thrust front and center (Hello, Wash), it can only mean they're not long for this world. Taylor's second-in-command (Simone Kessell) sacrificed herself so the Shannon family could escape, which would actually have made an impact on the audience if we had ever cared about the character before. Should Not: A clearly insane villain: Taylor's insipid and insufferable son, not the dinosaurs, became the colony's ultimate villain, whose work to destroy Terra Nova was secondary to Zuckerman's overacting as his most grievous offence. Like Michael Myers of Halloween, he's also the character who refuses to die. Do you think Terra Nova should be renewed? What did you think of the Season 1 finale? 'The Dark Knight Rises' Viral Campaign Continues: IMAX Tickets for Advance Footage

On Thursday, a mysterious website called Operation Early Bird popped up online with a countdown. The info was posted courtesy of @TheFireRises, a Twitter account linked to 'The Dark Knight Rises.' It's all part of the viral marketing campaign of the next 'Batman' sequel and earlier Friday, at 1 p.m. EDT, the countdown on the Early Bird website ended. So, what did it reveal? A giant map that gives fans early screening information about the six-minute prologue that's scheduled to play in front of 'Mission: Impossible -- Ghost Protocol.' However, there's a catch: In order to get the tickets, you will have to enter coordinates currently being played over on TheDarkKnightRises.com. After that, you will be able to book tickets to see the prologue on Dec. 13, three days before 'Mission: Impossible' hits IMAX theaters. Just a heads up, the Operation Early Bird site is currently down, likely due to the enormous amount of traffic heading there now. So if you want your prologue tickets, you may have to have to be patient. The full 'Dark Knight Rises' will hit theaters on July 20, 2012. 'Mission' Accomplished In Dubai: Tom Cruise Edition

By Joel Hanek MTV News reporter Josh Horowitz and producer Joel Hanek are currently in Dubai covering the world premiere of "Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol." These are their stories. If you've been following the adventures of MTV News' very own reporter Josh Horowitz and I this week on Movies Blog, you know that we've traveled all the way to Dubai for the world premiere of "Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol." And let's just say, right now we are standing on an aircraft carrier with a banner behind us that reads: MISSION ACCOMPLISHED. OK, that reference is neither timely, accurate, nor funny, so let's move on. What I learned during the trip: 1) Scrambled eggs in the Middle East are orange. Crazy, right? 2) Simon Pegg is even more hilarious than I thought. 3) Tom Cruise is probably the nicest man on the planet. After exploring the sights of Dubai aka the Middle East's Big and Tall Shop, since it has either the biggest or tallest everything we were ready for our interviews. Only feet away from the beach and with the imposing Burj Al Arab on the horizon, the stars of "MI:4" were whisked into our junket room one by one. Although they had all been traveling around Asia for the past few weeks, everyone was in great spirits. Director Brad Bird, the genius behind Pixar movies like "The Incredibles," described the mind-blowing climbing scenes on top of the Burj Khalifa; Anil Kapoor was strangely hypnotic and inspiring; Paula Patton was extremely charming and insanely beautiful; and Simon Pegg, one of my personal geek heroes, had a very nerdy and hilarious conversation with Josh. Finally, Tom Cruise entered the room. For someone who defines the word "celebrity," he certainly acts like a normal human. He arrived in the room all smiles, greeting every single person. Then you hear that iconic laugh, and you're reminded of the countless classics and blockbusters you've watched him in over the years. It was definitely strange seeing Cruise in Dubai without the aid of an IMAX theater. After getting the inside scoop on "Mission Impossible," unearthing some juicy "Top Gun 2" news, and shooting an upcoming After Hours, the interview ended. One costume change and 30 minutes later, we arrived at the red carpet for the 8th Annual Dubai International Film Festival. The show kicked off with (who else?) Tom Cruise hitting the carpet. The crowd went into a frenzy, and between chants of his name and camera flashes, Mr. Cruise paused at every person. This is not hyperbole: he took his time to meet every single person who arrived at the red carpet. As Josh tweeted, "I think I just watched Tom Cruise autograph something for every citizen of Dubai." And to think he does this in every single city they travel to. Thats why he is the nicest man on the planet. Him, and my grandma. And maybe Santa.

Kurt Sutter Hopes To Keep Sons Of Anarchy Going For At Least 7 Seasons

Kurt Sutter, the colorful and occasionally churlish creator of the FX biker smash Sons of Anarchy that wrapped its fourth and most successful campaign last night, isoptimistic that his show will see a seventh season. Or more. SOA already has been renewed for a fifth season of 13 episodes. He said during a conference call with reporters this morning, “We’re hoping to be able to tell the story we want to tell in a seven-season arc, to have the length of time to do that. At least we’re open to exploring that.” But he added that his experience as a writer-exec producer on The Shield tells him that “the above the line costs can become too much” when trying to go beyond season seven. The reason Sutter is even able to consider three seasons into the future is the fact SOA just enjoyed its highest-rated season, standing as the No.2 scripted drama on basic cable (trailing only AMC’s The Walking Dead) and the highest-rated series ever on FX. He credits the show’s increasing viewership in part to its availability over Netflix. “It helped people really plug into and get into the show the first few seasons,” Sutter believes. “It’s been really important to our rise.” Equally important, Sutter believes, has been his drama’s ability to skirt the difficult line between art and commerce. “I’m very aware that I’m writing a show for television,” he said, “so I do want to write storylines that are rich and complex and characters that are three-dimensional. We’re fortunate to have actors who weekly give tremendous performances. But there’s also an element of the show that’s incredibly pulpy and entertaining, and that’s as important as the rich, deep character stuff. I have no desire to run a show that only a couple of hundred people watch. If I wanted that kind of audience, I’d go do theater…I’m not writing the show in a vacuum. And I’m an egomaniac. I want to be loved, honored, worshiped and adored by everyone. So I want a big audience. I love the fact we’re beating the (broadcast) networks in key demos.” Sutter credited the show’s healthy ratings to “the fact I surround myself with people who are way more talented than I am. And great actors.” Sutter admitted that he’s considering altering the SOA pacefor season fiveso that there is perhaps a bit less tumult packed throughout each episode. “My sensefor next season is that it will be a slower boil,” he said. “This season, everyone was sort of out of breath by the end of every episode, and my sense is that next season that won’t be the case.” He added thathe was open to continuing to have guest stars appear on SOA who also worked with him on The Shield but was reluctant to have it extend to that show’s stars Michael Chiklis and Walton Goggins.”I think it would be impossible for them to be perceived as somebody else in this world. It would be too distracting to bring them onto the show, as much as I love and adore them as actors and people.” And he hasn’t yet decided how Sons will wrap, noting this morning, “Whether they’ll all wind up dead in a big puddle of blood at the end has yet to be determined.”

Do you know the Strategies of 'Hugo'? (And 24 Other Urgent Questions)

This Thanksgiving weekend, 'Hugo' -- a film that's being promoted to children, which was directed through the guy who once shot a scene of the guy getting his mind crushed inside a vise -- is going to be launched in a theater that's a minimum of within driving distance of where you stand sitting right now. What's 'Hugo'? Why wouldn't you see 'Hugo' rather than, or together with, other family fare 'The Muppets' and 'Arthur Christmas'? Like a service we answer every question you could possibly have about Martin Scorsese's 'Hugo.' Q: Is the film using the dog? A: You've a couple of things wrong here: You are considering Steven Spielberg's 'The Adventures of Tintin,' which you are then confusing with Rin Container Container. Q: Therefore the dog's title is 'Hugo'? A: 'Hugo' isn't in regards to a dog. Hugo Cabret (Asa Butterfield) is really a youthful boy who lives inside a Paris stop. Q: How come Hugo reside in a stop? A: Because his father (Jude Law) died inside a fire, departing Hugo parentless. He's sent to dedicate yourself his uncle (Ray Winstone), who also ends up having a significant problem with alcohol. Q: The number of films has Jude Law experienced this season? A: Such as the approaching 'Sherlock Holmes' follow up, just three. That is his limit because the Jude Law Movie Regulation Act of 2004 was passed. Q: Is Hugo's uncle violent? A: No. Just absent and hard to rely on. Hugo takes it upon themself to carry on his uncle's job of winding the clocks in the stop. Q: Why would Hugo continue doing this? May be the stop paying Hugo? A: Hugo doesn't appear to become getting taken care of his efforts, but he is doing use his time in the station to steal parts to repair a damaged automan he and the father have been focusing on before his father's dying. Q: Oh, I recall Automan. It had been a tv series in 1983 looking Dezi Arnez Junior. A: No, within this situation, an automan is really a mechanical guy who, once wound, are capable of doing certain tasks. Within this situation, Hugo's automan can write. Q: Exactly what does the automan write? A: Well, that is what Hugo really wants to discover. He thinks it may be a note from his dead father. But his plans are tossed obviously when he's caught stealing by Georges Méliès (Ben Kingsley) who turns Hugo to the neighborhood stop inspector (Sacha Baron Cohen). Q: Oh, does Sacha Baron Cohen reprise his role as... A: No. Even before you request, stop. Q: Wait, the director Georges Méliès? A: Well, yes. And Hugo soon befriends Méliès' Goddaughter, Isabelle (Chloe Sophistication Moretz). Q: Is 'Hugo' your favorite movies of the season? A: Yes. Q: What else could you tell convince me to determine 'Hugo'? A: Nothing. Since you will not. And many likely you've no clue this movie is supposed for you personally, not youthful children. Q: Wait, does a gangster have his mind squashed inside a vise at any time throughout 'Hugo'? A: No. 'Hugo' is unquestionably safe for kids, but because the movie progresses, its central plot changes drastically. Q: So how exactly does the plot change? A: It might be less a film about Hugo and much more a film about Georges Méliès. I actually do fear the more I only say, the less surprised you'll be as you're watching 'Hugo.' Q: Since the dog, Tintin, turns up? A: Oh for fuck's sake, Tintin isn't a dog. Again, that's Rin Container Container. Q: Ah, so Rin Container Container constitutes a surprise cameo? A: Yes. Exactly. This is the large surprise: Rin Container Container, your dog which has been dead for half a century. Q: Will anybody see 'Hugo' a few days ago? A: This is the problem: If people understood more what 'Hugo' is all about, they'd probably become more inclined to determine it. But, regrettably, the greater that's revealed about 'Hugo,' the less an individual would benefit from the experience. Q: Are you going to make a pointless example? A: Sure! It's as though I were selling a clump of Play-Doh (I am happening the assumption here that children love Play-Doh) only hidden within the Play-Doh is Georges Méliès. Q: Is Hugo the very best 3-D you have ever seen? A: Yes. Q: Is 'Hugo' Martin Scorsese's best product previously 10 years? A: Yes. Q: What film made you more happy upon departing the theater: 'Hugo' or 'The Muppets'? A: The pleasure from 'The Muppets' was more intense, like I'd just smoked a whole bag of Fun Dip. (I am initially from Missouri, we smoke our Fun Dip to organize for the eventual Very Meth addiction). But 'Hugo' left me having a more warming, all encompassing kind of happiness. (You realize, like from heroin.) Q: Will most patrons decide to see 'Hugo' in 3-D? A: Most patrons won't skip on depth, but will in all probability skip height and width, too. Q: Should you could pick your personal quote to become blurbed within the advertisements for 'Hugo' a few days ago, what can you choose? A: "'Hugo' is en fuego" Mike Ryan, Moviefone Q: Um... it becomes clear that does not rhyme, right? A: It's close. And I believed it was clever: you realize, adhering using the French theme and all sorts of... Q: No, it isn't. I am talking about, really, it isn't close whatsoever. Also, that isn't even French, it's The spanish language. A: Right, fuck it. You are able to contact Mike Ryan on Twitter. Follow Moviefone on Twitter Like Moviefone on Facebook

New Zealand Vies for First Oscar Nomination in Foreign Language Category

This story first appeared in the Nov. 25 issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine.our editor recommendsThe Orator (O Le Tulafale): Film Review'The Orator' Named New Zealand's First Foreign-Language Oscar Entry When Samoan director Tusi Tamasese first met New Zealand producer Catherine Fitzgerald at a Wellington film school, his greatest ambition was to "make a short film." Three years later, Tamasese, 36, is being hailed as a brave new voice in world cinema, and his debut feature, The Orator, is New Zealand's first-ever entry in the foreign-language Oscar race. Orator is pioneering in more ways than that: It's the first feature shot entirely in the Samoan language and the first filmed on the South Pacific island of Upolu. The story focuses on Saili, the son of the dead village chief who has been ostracized by the community because he is a dwarf. Quiet and unassuming, Saili is forced to defend his family and way of life with nothing more than words and the power of his voice. In doing so, he claims his rightful place as chief. Tamasese, who grew up on Upolu, the smaller of Samoa's two islands, says it was important that Samoa become a character in the film. "The landscape, people, culture, images, color, sound and feel of Samoa offer this story a new and unique perspective of life," he says. While he wrote the script in English and translated it back into Samoan, he says he was careful to maintain authenticity by shooting on location with a mostly untrained local cast. Capturing the rhythms and cadence of spoken Samoan were key to the film's plot, he adds, particularly the difference between the villagers' everyday musical language and the orators' more formal speech. "Formal oratory is part of Samoa's poetry and history," says Tamasese. "I wanted to showcase that as well as the language of everyday life." Tamasese's ambling, observant directing style, which he says is derived from traditional Samoan storytelling, has wowed international critics and festival audiences alike. Orator was showered with honors upon its premiere at the Venice International Film Festival, where it was named best film by the CinemAvvenire youth jury, took the top prize from Europe's art house cinemas association and received a special mention from the jurors of the Venice Horizons sidebar. And star Fiaula Sanote has picked up a best actor nomination from the Asia Pacific Screen Awards, to be handed out in November. Amid all of the plaudits, the soft-spoken Tamasese remains humble. He has an idea for his next project but doesn't want to give away details. His hope, he says, is that Orator will pave the way for a new Samoan style of filmmaking "that equally tells a Pacific Island story that the whole cinema world can understand and appreciate." Which film will emerge from this weekend as box-office victor? To the preview! NATIONWIDE RELEASES 'Jack and Jill' What's the story: Adam Sandler is Jack. Adam Sandler is Jill. Al Pacino is ... Al Pacino? Yep, this is happening. Box-office projection: Take away his dramedies ('Funny People,' 'Punch-Drunk Love' 'Reign Over,' 'Spanglish') and voice work ('Eight Crazy Nights' and 'Zookeeper'), and Adam Sandler hasn't had a film open with less than $30 million since 'Little Nicky' in 2000. Over that time period, ten of Sandler's films earned over $100 million in ticket sales. Which is another way of saying: dude is Telfon, and one of the few reliable box-office stars remaining. You might think 'Jack and Jill' looks bad, but even with some stiff competition, the safe bet is to assume Sand-man will reach $30 million once again -- unless, this is the next 'Little Nicky.' Here's hoping. $30.7 million [Showtimes & Tickets | Mr. Moviefone's Six-Second Review] 'Immortals' What's the story: Titans! Will! Murder! Each! Other! Violently! The heavily violent 'Immortals' centers on the gods teaming with a common man (Henry Cavill) to defeat the evil King Hyperion (Mickey Rourke). Box-office projection: If '300' and 'Clash of the Titans' proved anything, it's that audiences love shirtless gladiators. As such: hello 'Immortals'! (Not that director Tarsem Singh would like that comparison.) The hard-R actioner should get a bump from being in 3D, as well as being the only choice for action meatheads, but don't expect major box office. After all, 'Conan the Barbarian' was similarly R-rated and swords-y, and it stumbled badly in August. $14 million [Showtimes & Tickets | Mr. Moviefone's Six-Second Review] 'J. Edgar' What's the story: Leonardo DiCaprio stars as J. Edgar Hoover, the controversial director of the FBI, in Clint Eastwood's biopic. Armie Hammer plays Clyde Tolson, Hoover's long-time companion. Box-office projection: Nothing says, "run out to the theater!" like a 150-minute drama about one of the more reviled characters in American history. But! Eastwood and DiCaprio are name brands, and general audiences are used to forking over hard-earned money to see their wares. 'J. Edgar' had a successful launch on Wednesday, but that doesn't mean much for the overall picture -- the film earned $53,000 from 4 theaters in NY and Los Angeles; still, on only 1900 screens, 'J. Edgar' could easily pull down double-digits, and if 'Immortals' stumbles, could be the second-biggest new release of the weekend. $10.6 million [Showtimes & Tickets | Mr. Moviefone's Six-Second Review] LIMITED RELEASES Out via on demand for over a month, the Lars Von Trier drama 'Melancholia' finally arrives in limited release; check out Moviefone's interviews with stars Kirsten Dunst and Alexander Skarsgard. Also in limited theaters, the horror thriller '11-11'11' and Werner Herzog's well-reviewed documentary 'Into the Abyss.' Mega Buzz: New Loves on Big Bang Theory, House and Lots of Grey's Anatomy Tears

Jim Parsons, Jesse Spencer, Jesse Williams Every week, editors Adam Bryant and Natalie Abrams satisfy your need for TV scoop. Please send all questionsto mega_scoop@tvguide.com.Got any scoop on The Big Bang Theory? - ShawnNATALIE: How frustrating is it to watch Sheldon and Amy fumble their way into a relationship? Have no fear: A big karmic kick in the ass is on its way. When Stuart asks Sheldon if it's OK if he asks Amy out on a date, Sheldon will be forced once and for all to define his feelings. Please tell me House isn't going to force Chase and Dr. Adams into a relationship. It's like Thirteen all over again. - MelanieADAM: Jesse Spencer doesn't think the show is necessarily going to go that route, perhaps for the same reasons to which you allude. "It might be too obvious, you know? I like to steer away from the status quo," he says. Besides, Chase doesn't have time for love since he's... auditioning for a reality show? To prep for the potential gig, he'll have to spend some QT with Dr. Park, who will relentlessly mock Chase's obsession with manscaping.I hear there's a cliffhanger in this week's episode of Grey's Anatomy. What can you tease? - HeatherNATALIE: How's this for a tease? There will be two interesting surgeries on the midseason finale of Grey's Anatomy. For the first, a doctor will be required to operate on a person whose identity is concealed. The second will go so badly that it will derail two careers. (Warning: You will cry like a baby in the baptistry.)So Patrick Jane basically dared Red John to come out of hiding on The Mentalist. Won't somebody take notice of that? - JerryADAM: Yes, and her name is FBI Agent Susan Darcy, who we met briefly in last week's episode. Although Jane thinks he can charm his way off her radar, he'll soon learn otherwise. "She's smarter and less easy to throw off the trail," creator Bruno Heller tells us. "Once she gets the bit between her teeth she's not going to give up until she gets to the truth. The complication is they very much like each other." Does that mean what we think it does? "There are definitely romantic sparks, but they cannot catch fire because they're in the middle of this adversarial relationship," Heller says. Thanks for the scoop on The Walking Dead. Got any more? - ChrisNATALIE: Why doesn't Hershel want the new survivors to set up camp near the barn? You'll find out soon enough. "It seems like he's definitely hiding something in there," creator Robert Kirkman tells us. "There might be some hints as to what's in the barn in the comic book series." (I think he means who's in the barn.)I'm curious to see Mimi Rogers as Walden's mom on Two and a Half Men. Know anything else about her appearance? - TinaADAM: Methinks we're going to meet lots of parents, including the hoity-toity British mother and father of Walden's new girlfriend. Can you imagine Kelso Walden breaking bread with a starchy retired Royal Air Force major? Talk about a crash landing. Is Jared Harris really returning to Fringe? - RyanNATALIE: After a very spoilery photo leaked online, we asked the producers. "There are definitely pictures out there of Jared Harris filming Fringe. Who he's playing and in what context is all wildly speculative," executive producer Jeff Pinkner tells us. "Internet rumors aside, our two universes will probably find that there is a threat to them both and they're going to have to figure out a way to work together." Is that why it looks like Harris is talking to his over-there doppelganger?Have you heard anything else about that Castle case involving the dirty politician? - PhilipADAM: Think Spitzer. The politician in question is the mayor and he finds himself implicated in the murder of a woman who had just met with an agent to discuss an explosive book deal. The likely topic of the book: the mayor's penchant for employing a service known as "Dial-a-Goddess." (Wonder what Castle will think of his buddy when this comes out?)I really wish Leslie and Ben would get back together on Parks & Recreation. - EmilyNATALIE: You're not the only one! An upcoming episode offers a glimpse of hope: A chivalrous Ben punches a man in the face after he doesn't vote for Leslie - and calls her a b----. Leslie thanks Ben with a smooch, which is all caught on camera. Not so good for her campaign, but excellent for Adam Scott's job security!I'm glad some of the Bones characters are going to be on The Finder, but will they mention Bones stories? It might be a nice tease during the long hiatus. - JessicaADAM: Hart Hanson, the brain behind both shows, says he isn't keen on having the shows overlap to that degree. However, when Hodgins heads to the Everglades in a Finder episode, it'll pick up at least one thread from the show's pilot. "Walter Sherman had kind of a thing for Brennan," Hanson says. "So that will be part of his interactions with Hodgins. He's like, 'Are [Booth and Brennan] serious? How long are they going to stay together?' He's very inappropriate. Of course, Hodgins does not want to discuss his friends and their baby. There's fun to be had there."I love that Once Upon a Time is introducing Cinderella. What can you tease? - LisaNATALIE: You might not recognize Storybrooke's Cinderella, especially since she's a young pregnant woman named Ashley (Falling Skies' Jessy Schram). "She's trying to get away from some bad decisions, and Mr. Gold [Robert Carlyle] is tied to that because everyone makes a deal with him," Schram says. "Emma sees a lot of herself in Ashley and she helps her and guides her; Ashley grows some balls because of Emma coming to town."Are the CSI: Miami writers thinking of giving Horatio a love interest this season? - Ash, via TwitterADAM: Thinking about it? Yes. This season? Maybe? "It is on our drawing board," producer Barry O'Brien tells us. "We're looking for the right opportunity. Closure with Marisol is the way we opened the season, so we're very aware that we have let the genie out of the bottle a little bit. It's something that we're working toward."Adam's Mega Rave: The Walking Dead's attention to detail has always been first-rate, but watching a bloated walker rip in two as the survivors attempted to remove him from their water supply was so perfectly gross that I think it will stand as one of my favorite kills of the series.Natalie's Mini Rant: I've never actually wanted a main character to die, but if it means no more Morgan as the Intersect on Chuck, well...(Additional reporting by Kate Stanhope)Crave scoop on your favorite TV shows?E-mail Adam and Natalie at mega_scoop@tvguide.comor drop us a line atTwitter.com/TVGuide

Now he's apparently in foretells co-star with Steve Carell in Bennett Miller's new planned drama Foxcatcher. The director, who's presently around the receiving finish of praise for Kaira Pitt baseball drama Moneyball, continues to be developing the film for any couple of years alongside Capote author Serta Futterman and fellow scribe E Max Frye.Foxcatcher would tell the real story of John du Pont (Carell), the heir to some chemical fortune who experienced from attacks of paranoid schizophrenia. Throughout one particular easily fit in 1996, he shot and wiped out Olympic wrestler Dork Schultz (Tatum, if he signs on). The title, just in case you had been wondering, originates from the title from the Pennsylvania factory, that was built by du Pont, and in which the incident happened.Du Pont visited prison for that crime, where he died this past year. Schultz, who had been 36 at that time, left out a wife and 2 young children.Burns is rounding in the financing for that movie, even though he does not possess a distributor in position yet, we doubt that'll take lengthy because of the names involved even when they do not score Tatum. The goal would be to start shooting early the coming year.

Edgar, they’re programming Shame, among my fall honours season must-sees as well as the potentially existence-changing opportunity to determine Michael Fassbender bare everything. Cillian Murphy Dodges 'Dark Knight Rises' Question

Cillian Murphy isn't "going to contribute to the rumors or speculation" about whether he's in 'The Dark Knight Rises,' he tells BBC Radio, but that's not exactly a resounding denial, is it? He was more eager to talk about his current film 'In Time' during the segment, but -- of course -- the interviewer tried his best to get Murphy to slip up about when he last saw director Christopher Nolan. Could Murphy's sly, dimpled smile actually mean he is reprising his role as Scarecrow? Watch his fidgety interview ahead. 'The Dark Knight Rises' is currently filming and if Murphy is in the film, he has yet to be photographed on-set in either Pittsburgh or Los Angeles. Key word there is "photographed." Don Giovanni

Peter Mattei might be the sexy title character and Luca Pisaroni his unhappy servant in Don Giovanni.A Metropolitan Opera output of an opera by 50 percent operates by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Libretto by Lorenzo Da Ponte. Conductor, Fabio Luisi director, Michael Grandage.Don Giovanni - Peter Mattei Leporello - Luca Pisaroni Donna Anna - Marina Rebeka Donna Elvira - Barbara Frittoli Zerlina - Mojca Erdmann Don Ottavio - Ramon Vargas Masetto - Joshua Blossom The Comendatore - Stefan KocanThe combination of Donmar Warehouse artistic director Michael Grandage and gifted baritone Mariusz Kwiecien appeared as being a potent one -- the first sort making his Metropolitan Opera pointing debut having a completely new output of Mozart's "Don Giovanni," the 2nd showing NY to his acclaimed interpretation in the title role. However it wasn't being, due to an injuries that sidelined Kwiecien. Fill-in Peter Mattei could not save the evening from a sense of disappointment: Grandage has produced a staging that appropriately encounters the paces without delivering much if this involves insight or excitement. It's possibly churlish to grouse about Mattei when he walked in on such short notice, but the truth is he lacks the charisma of Kwiecien, who is surely a effective presence onstage. Since the sexy Don, Mattei comes off a great deal a lot more like a tall, gawky frat boy from the Judd Apatow film, and also the voice, while fluid, does not carry the burnished, oaken quality one craves for your part. It had been a production produced to showcase Kwiecien's star charisma, that may have invigorated the proceedings. Grandage's primary departure from tradition is always to move the knowledge in early 17th century for the mid-18th, also to add a bit more groping and fondling than we are familiar with seeing. Set and costume designer Christopher Oram creates a production heavy on monochrome, getting one set showing three tiers of balconied home home windows that frequently split apart into modular sections and be the kind of arcaded backdrop. What looks striking at curtain's rise begins to use thin with the finish in the extended evening. Grandage does, however, deliver a coup for your finale: Giovanni makes his trip lower to Hell based on huge bursts of real flame so effective you'll be able to possess the warmth shooting out into the auditorium. The cast is uneven, with bass-baritone Luca Pisaroni giving the evening's most appealing and well-rounded performance as Giovanni's unhappy servant Leporello. Ramon Vargas can be a kind of elegance as Don Ottavio his exquisite "Il mio tesoro" in Act II makes him a sustained ovation. Joshua Blossom is certainly an endearing Masetto with fine-grained tone, but Stefan Kocan proves a shaky-voiced, unimposing Commendatore. The women fare poorly, with Barbara Frittoli as Donna Elvira making particularly rough, patchy sounds throughout Act I. Marina Rebeka can be a believably tortmented Donna Anna, and her voice rings out remarkably within the upper register, but she lacks the burden and gravity required for the role's heavier, more declamatory sections. Mojca Erdmann is serviceable but a little more as Zerlina. Inside the pit, Fabio Luisi ably substitutes for your indefinitely-sidelined James Levine he conducts in the harpsichord, that they comes with the opera's recitatives.Set and costume designer, Christopher Oram lighting designer, Paule Constable. McG's This Means War gets a trailer

McG's action romcom This Means War, has landed a trailer, and it's... well, take a look for yourself.Typically, a new McG project isn't something we'd be salivating over, but the cast (Tom Hardy, Reese Witherspoon, Chris Pine) had our interest snared. And while it's hard to judge from a two-minute promo, it's looking like a cacophony of clichés from the action and romcom handbooks, and it makes True Lies and Mr. & Mrs. Smith look like the epitome of cinéma vérité realism.Hardy and Pine are two of "the CIA's best", and they also happen to be bestest buds.Their friendship is shaken when they discover they're dating the same girl (Witherspoon, who seems to be essaying one of the least likeable romcom leads for some time), and they use all of the CIA resources at their disposal to ruin the other man's chances. It's only a short teaser, but it's not bursting with promise. That said, maybe the charm of the stars and some decent set pieces will make for entertaining Saturday night fare.Check out the trailer here:This Means War opens on 17 February 2012.You can now read Total Film magazine on iPhone and iPad via Apple Newsstand! To find it on the UK App Store, click here. For Your (Re-)Consideration: Freddy Got Fingered

The Freddy Got Fingered rehabilitation campaign that commenced in earnest last year with actor/writer/director Tom Green extends now to the comedy critic ranks: “Freddy Got Fingered isn’t a terrible movie — it’s just baffling and non-formulaic. It takes sight gags that feel like they could come from a silent film and it amps them up to utterly ridiculous proportions. It’s downright visionary for Green to find a dead deer on the side of the road and put it on like a cape, or for Green to lick the exposed bone after his friend (Harland Williams) suffers a brutal skateboarding injury, or for Green to manually stimulate a horse while crying out, ‘I’m a farmer, Daddy!’ Yes, it’s funny to jerk off of a horse, but it’s also anti-comedy, comparable to Andy Kaufman or ’70s Steve Martin. It just came out in a time in which anti-comedy wasn’t ringing many people’s bells.” Discuss? [Splitsider]

Nobody Sinks Rihanna's Battleship and 7 Alternative Activities Learned round the Number of 'Battleship'

Summer season 2011 is formally inside the books, but it's never too early to start speaking in regards to the popcorn movies arranged for next summer season. Most likely probably the most spoken-about movies scheduled for 2012 is 'Battleship,' opening on May 28. Yes, it's consistent with the overall game, but trying to create 'Battleship' for the silver screen involved more than saying "B5" the expansion was presented with extensive utilization of real Navy apple and retrofitted a existence-size barge to have the ability to film round the water in Hawaii. Moviefone was asked for to register in the roundtable discussion with director Peter Berg and stars Taylor Kitsch, Alexander Skarsgard, Brooklyn Decker and Beyonce round the deck in the USS Missouri situated in Jewel Harbor. Ahead everything you will have to know for next summer's blockbuster earth-versus-aliens fight round the sea. 1. Just how can they've created a movie from the overall game? It's simple! Through the RIMPAC Games, an worldwide naval event, an alien ship crashes in to a satellite and explodes. U.S. and Japanese ships hit water to analyze... which is when the fight begins. The humans take part in combat getting numerous five alien ships: four regents as well as the mothership, a destroyer. Each ship is stacked for the gills getting a squadron of ugly aliens (produced by Industrial Light and Miracle) and so they get plenty useful using their weapon associated with preference: a massive, spherical chainsaw-like device known to as "the shredder." Then to finish it, the aliens fly the sonar/radar forcing the humans to rely on sight and instinct. So yes: it plays out being an intergalactic existence-or-dying version in the famous game. 2. Peter Berg takes the idea of "Battleships versus. Aliens" very seriously. "Maturing over the sea, my father will be a naval historian, I had been elevated on watercraft," Berg mentioned. "I used to be always a massive fan in the Navy and flirted with doing a little of various naval films. After which it I believed eventually, 'What about 'Battleship'? What about creating a naval combat film? Modern-day naval combat?' We looked into the rights and so they were available and met while using Hasbro people. They were like, 'Well what's the movie?'" An problem that Berg was prepared. "From the top my thoughts: 'I think they'll fight a recon group from another planet.' They were like: 'What?' I mentioned, 'Like a recon group. As being a choose couple of of worldwide ships, just like five ships from the sport, and we'll use a contained enemy rather than global domination. Contain that enemy by getting an idea and look for and transform it into a fair fight.'" 3. The cast has legit military training. Beyonce: We labored with real military people, people inside the Navy, individuals who've fought against against in Iraq before," mentioned co-star Beyonce. "They virtually came and drilled me. That certain guy, Jesse, screamed at me, cursed me, 'Ow!' Assisted me do push-ups. Everything. My nearest friend was there the second time we labored together, which i mentioned to her, 'Okay, I will do acting class, so just stay in the mattress room. Don't give consideration to anything he's saying at this time around.A Which I recall she just saved travelling, and he or she would likely consider me, 'Are you okay? Did he just say 'f--k you' for you personally?A Nevertheless it got you inside the attitude, that's what you really undergo, after they first register. It is not a stroll-in-the-park. Alexander Skarsgard: I spent 6 days in Europe shooting a Lars Von Trier film ['Melancholia'] where our catering crew here was bigger than anything there. I land and so they take me on water around the gigantic barge inside the ocean, with cranes and jetskis and 5,000 people." Taylor Kitsch: It's a floating base camping... In my opinion everyone has shown their worth already using what they've done before so I'm not worried about that. It's so from my control. In my opinion the on-the-water stuff will be a huge checkmark for individuals, being on schedule and receive the best shot. Particularly with the results. However don't circle people things. I circle plot points and character stuff that will challenge me becoming an actor. If you don't be worried about us, the film will most likely be s--t. For me personally. People be worried about the figures inside the film, you'll be able to inflate stuff ten million occasions. However when there's not something there that people be worried about, that doesn't use a heartbeat in it -- That's our responsibility. Brooklyn Decker: We've real veterans causeing this to be movie unique. It is not all smoke and mirrors. Pete's large on getting us prepare yourself and possess understanding round the military and comprehending the order in the ranks. Peter Berg: I have got an excellent relationship while using Department of Defense. The respect for your military is not requested. So there's never anything large. Once we take action that's flat-out against military policy, if there's fat loss problem or Taylor Kitsch desires to placed on his hair longer, we transfer everything stuff. Watch a clip for 'Battleship' 4. Brooklyn and Beyonce achieve mix things up while using boys. Brooklyn Decker: We're both really really large tomboys. It's she which i, and many types of the males. There's no, "We're running on get manicures together." It's all regulated controlled guns and war, that's really fun. Beyonce: [My character] isn't keen on boys. She isn't keen on women either. She's nearly her weapons and her work. Brooklyn Decker: I'd shoot a gun after which it I wasn't, therefore i was like, "males, seriously.Inch It's a large one round the stylish. We've an Iraq vet who lost both his legs in 2007 and that we are side-kicks to one another inside our story. With him being there, he's really teaching me all this military lingo and the way they're doing things and fight. His fighter instinct arrives so being around him type of lights a fire place under you. 5. Peter Berg makes his stars do crazy things. Taylor Kitsch: Pete has such their very own taste for doing things, from shooting and editing to storyboards and character, and telling an individuals side in the story which is often the first step toward this film. I merely know and trust these cats that it's going to be so intense. I realize to see it only at that level because when Pete appears for you personally and describes what these shots is going to be and what will happen, you need to simply bring much energy in it, only to match the things they is going to do in publish-production. Alexander Skarsgard: It assists to that Pete is certainly an actress themselves. Around the movie similar to this where there are many action, plenty of explosions, the guy behind the digital camera is certainly an actress and could interact with you, he likes you associations which is not by mentioning explosions and awesome effects. Brooklyn Decker: You'll be fighting an alien and he'll throw items to you prefer, "order a cheeseburger and Fried taters!" and will also be like "what!?" He's doing the work only to throw you off to ensure that the mind can get fresh again. You never know what he'll created. He knows how to talk with the majority of us, that people think enables us to particularly with Rhianna which i that are not used to sets. Beyonce: Warn? Who that? Who alerts you you have to jump into the middle of the ocean and pretend that you're drowning? Who that? Him? Never. 6. What exactly are we able to expect within the alien Battleships? Peter Berg: Consider them since the Lewis and Clark generation ... It started with the notion that a recon group from another planet finds its approach to the world. Now, they hone in round the signals that individuals send to ask planets, and so they acquired on one that's launched here around the island of the island of oahu and so they basically supervised in about it. They have offensive fire-energy, they carry scientists and communications equipment. They are made to choose a planet, much like we'd, that has assets they're clearly a bit more technically advanced than we are. I used to be trying to build up a peek, therefore i started studying high-speed footage of numerous water bugs, water pond bugs that have these kind of spidery legs and so they can relocate vertical directions. They have vertical space. They appreciate this tactile pressure going initially and explode. [Round the peg-like weapons the aliens possess] It is not exactly a red-colored-colored peg. It is really an ILM-designed, awesome, sophisticated component that suddenly transpires with detonate. It's a little of ordinance when someone knows the sport, will have a way to recognize: "Ok, this can be a peg." But they're not red-colored-colored pegs, they aren't blue pegs. Hasbro doesn't sit around here and say "we would like this which whichInch. We're absolve to do whatever we wish but it is, essentially, a personality-based naval action-adventure story. 7. The heavens leave the behind the steer and acquire physical while using alien risks. Alexander Skarsgard: [Taylor]Has an appreciation scene with one. Taylor Kitsch: This is when the follow-up will come in. I fall crazily for each other now I'm relating to this other planet. Alexander Skarsgard: It's as being a cleaning cleaning soap opera... and you'll perform the romantic comedy. Taylor Kitsch: It'll blow everybody away. Alexander Skarsgard: Unlike anything you've ever seen 8. Just how can the heavens fare inside a real wager on 'Battleship'? Beyonce: Really in Barbados that doesn't even exist ... I came here and so they stood a whole number of toys throughout my trailer, including the sport. We're really supposed to experience a little spend some time tonight so possibly I'll remove the Battleship game. They're not going to get ready for the -- Nobody sinks my battleship.

Lucky

An From Africa Entertainment presentation in colaboration with How Town Film Prods. Created by Lance Samuels. Executive producer, Christopher J. Wilmot. Directed, compiled by Avie Luthra. With: Sihle Dlamini, Jayashree Basavaraj, James Ngcob, Vusi Kunene. (Hindi, British, Zulu dialogue)From "Heidi" and "Harold and Maude" to Takeshi Kitano's "Kikujiro," there is an abundance of odd couplings of the extremely youthful and incredibly old. But rarely are these combinations as provocative as with "Lucky," an psychologically resonant portrait of recent Nigeria in addition to a love story from a black Helps-infected orphan and also the ornery Indian lady who involves his save. A performance through the venerable Jayashree Basavaraj could overcome the natural obstacles of language and geography, and niche release appears possible. Each of author-helmer Avie Luthra's protagonists are irascible figures. Lucky (Sihle Dlamini) is not even close to adorable, but has little reason to become: His mother has came back for their Zulu village inside a coffin, departing him only a sound cassette, that they does not possess the equipment to experience. With nowhere else to show, the headstrong 10-year-old sparks for Durban to locate his uncle Jabulani (James Ngcob), with whom his mother apparently left money for his schooling. Because it works out, the uncle has spent the cash and is not inclined to feel bad about this. It's within this ethnically different and divided city that Lucky meets Padma (Basavaraj), a resolute, ill-tempered old lady whose attitudes about race and segregation are rooted within the Nigeria of old she intuitively fears shades of black and wants nothing related to them. Lucky's tries to use her cassette player so he is able to hear his mother's dying message are met having a broomstick towards the face. But a buddy in a local restaurant recommends Padma concerning the upside of Helps orphans: The federal government pays a monthly stipend for one out of. Therefore the old lady provides the boy food along with a put on her terrace to rest. She still will not allow him to in her own house, though she's not averse towards the money. Quite simply, no a person's particularly pleasant in "Lucky," particularly Jabulani, who, when he discovers of Padma's plan, intends her, sucks her and cuts her having a knife. But she and Lucky both persevere, as her avarice eventually gives method to affection, and the hunger for any parent leads him to Dumisani (Vusi Kunene), whom Lucky thinks to become his father. Padma's reformation offers the heart from the film, and it is a reasonably foreseeable dramatic development youthful Lucky might not be particularly adorable, more determined than endearing, however, you be aware of old lady will change her tune. But helmer Luthra, a mental health specialist in addition to a filmmaker, handles it inside a manner both delicate and real. One extended scene, by which Padma and Lucky possess a conversation within their particular languages, is extremely touching. Tech credits are mixed. D.p. Willie Nel's palette appears more morose than it must be, but Phillip Miller's score is buoyant.Camera (color), Willie Nel editor, Josh Levinsky music, Phillip Burns production designer, Chantel Carter costume designer, Zureta Schulz seem (Dolby Digital), Arthur Kounduris, Charlotte now Buys casting, Moonyeenn Lee. Bollywood looks to TV for ideas

'Khichdi: The Movie' made a successful leap from TV to theaters.LONDON -- In Hollywood, TV series offer easy pickings for studios looking to develop known property for the bigscreen. But in India, filmmakers are just starting to harvest the riches of TV -- with mixed success. Actor-turned-director Anant Mahadevan is adapting a feature version of his '90s culture-clash comedy "Ghar jamai," which aired on pubcaster Doordarshan, with its second season on Zee TV. Show was about a young married man, played by Bollywood star R. Madhavan, living with his wife's family -- a social stigma in India.Mahadevan says the film will not be just a bigscreen version of the TV show, and will feature plots and actors largely different from the series, although Madhavan will reprise his role. A spring shoot in Canada and India is planned.Last year writer-director Aatish Kapadia made a bigscreen version of his successful 2002 sitcom "Khichdi," about a large family living in a crumbling mansion, after series producer Jamnadas Majethia sold the idea to Fox Star Studios India. The series, produced by UTV and Hats Off Prods., ran for 98 episodes over several seasons on News Corp.-owned Star Plus channel. The TV characters reprised their roles for "Khichdi: The Movie," which was a box office success. Budgeted at 20 million rupees ($422,000), it grossed $1.6 million."We saw the opportunity (to bring) Hollywood practices to India," says Vijay Singh, chief exec of Fox Star Studios India. "Popular and successful television shows like 'The Simpsons,' 'Mission: Impossible' and 'Sex and the City' get made into films regularly. This was an opportunity for the first time in India that a television series could be migrated onto the cinema platform."But shifting a property from the smallscreen to the silver screen, as in Hollywood, can be tricky and nothing guarantees success.Another immensely popular sitcom, "Office Office," a satire on Indian bureaucracy that began airing on SAB TV in 2001, was made into a feature by producer Eagle Films this year. "Chala mussaddi Office Office" underperformed at the box office.Producer-director Rajiv Mehra says older auds liked the film, but younger ones didn't."I think we tried too hard to stay true to our subject and did not cater to the wider audience," he says. But that hasn't deterred other filmmakers -- a feature version of AB Corp.'s 1993 sitcom "Dekh bhai dekh" is being planned.Singh and Mehra hope to produce more movie adaptations of hit shows but both feel the Indian market isn't quite ready yet."Audiences clearly differentiate between television content and film content, and (that) content has to be rewritten to suit the idiom of cinema," says Singh, who adds that the boom in film sequels also is slowing the opportunities for smallscreen-to-bigscreen fare.Mehra, too, sees a gap between film and TV auds. "Our television shows have the maximum viewership from housewives and the older generation, and cater to the 35-60 age group, whereas the cinemagoing audience is in the 17-30 age group," he says."I think it may not be out of line to say that our cinema today is more evolved than television programming. There was a time in the '80s when television was offering good and progressive content and cinema was stuck with formula. I think the roles have reversed." Japan comic axed over mob ties

Tokyo -- Shinsuke Shimada, a comedian and emcee who has been ubiquitous on Japanese TV for decades, quit showbiz Tuesday after cellphone emails came to light revealing his too-cozy relationship with an unnamed gangster. His agency, Yoshimoto, has given him the heave-ho. The networks airing the six shows that Shimada hosts have been thrown into a tizzy since few episodes are in the can and plans for alternatives are not yet in place. Fuji TV, which hosts a Shimada quizshow, has recorded episodes through Sept. 7 but does not know if it will air them. TV Tokyo, which broadcasts a local version of "Antique Roadshow" with Shimada as emcee, has pulled the show skedded for Wednesday and will air another program. It is mulling what to do next week. The NTV network, which skeds two Shimada variety shows in primetime, and TBS, which presents one, are also studying their options. Japanese TV talents frequently lose jobs or even careers for missteps that would be considered minor in Hollywood and elsewhere. Shimada, for example, didn't brake a law, but contact with the underworld is considered taboo at his elevated plane in the showbiz universe. Contact the Variety newsroom at news@variety.com
